Historical Notes
The mandate of the Board of Kwantlen College was to govern the affairs of the institution in accordance with the provincial College and Institute Act.
The founding Board of Kwantlen College had nine members, four of whom were appointed by the school districts of Delta, Langley, Richmond and Surrey, and five appointed by the Ministry of Education. The inaugural meeting took place on April 9, 1981 at the Newton Centre Boardroom. Fred Gingell, Vice President, Mohawk Oil, was the first Board Chair. During its first year of operation the Board of Governors established two sub-committees: Finance Committee, and the Personnel Committee. All other matters were dealt with by the full Board.
The Board of Governors at Kwantlen University College [1995-2008] consisted of 14 members. Eight are appointed by the provincial government, four are elected – two students, one faculty member and one staff member – and the President of Kwantlen and the Chair of Education Council are ex-officio members.
The current Board is responsible for setting the vision for the University and monitoring its progress. It is also involved with other activities: representing the institution to the community, supporting institutional activities and holding educational workshops for the Board to better understand the institution's issues and needs. The Board follows the Carver Model of Governance.
