From the newsletter, Inside (March 1997, p.3) caption below photo: Hands on: Surrey's Fine Arts students created medallions which will be sealed and buried in a container deep in the ground. Each medallion has two sides, a self-portrait and the student's view of the world today. The container is to be unearthed in the year 2097. (see Newsletter article for more information) [note: date of 2097 was later revised to 2098.]
The time capsule, containing the medallions (40 in total) was prepared by Fine Arts Instructor Jim Adams. As per the Board Regular Minutes (27 May 1998): On 19th May, the Honourable Andrew Petter, the Honourable Penny Priddy and the
Honourable Sue Hammell joined the Board of Governors and the University College
Community in the celebration of the construction of Surrey Phase II. The Minister
and MLAs lowered a time capsule into the ground on the site of the expansion of
Surrey Campus. The capsule contains medallions depicting the Fine Arts Student’s
views of the world today; the capsule is designated to be opened in 2098.
