Historical Notes
The President is the chief executive officer of the Institution and is accountable to the Board of Governors as per the College and Institute Act of British Columbia (RSBC 1996). As outlined in the act, the role of the President is to "supervise and direct, subject to the bylaws, the instructional, administrative and other staff of the institution and exercise powers and perform duties assigned to the president by the board."
Kwantlen College was established in 1981as a separate entity from Douglas College. At the time of the split R.H. (Reg) Pridham was the Acting President of Douglas College. The official ""split"" occurred on April 1st 1981 with Kwantlen College taking over all campus locations south of the Fraser River including a leased facility in Richmond and portable trailer campus located at 140th Street in Surrey.
A. (Tony) Wilkinson was the first President of Kwantlen College. Four major accomplishments marked Wilkinson's first year as President: expansion of the college's philosophy to include technical/technological education; preparation of a Provisional Five Year Education Plan; identification of a permanent site of the Surrey Campus; and lastly establishment of close links with the superintendents of the four school districts with a view to better articulation between the college and the school districts. During his tenure a major contribution to the institution "was the key role he played in working with the Federal Government to acquire a $5.4 million grant from the Skills Growth Fund to establish Kwantlen College's Technology Centre and implement seven Business and Engineering Technology programs." (KC Press Release dated [June 27, 1986]).
